Wittel Dormitory, admired by students of American architecture as one of Auburn's most significant examples of classical nineteenth-century designs, grows more dignified with age. The original three brick construction by Samuel S. Wittel in the early 1900's must have taken aback even the most sophisticated in Auburn when gossip circulated through town about its copper roof from England, garden pool surrounded by garden plants and the arrival of silver plate for the front entrance ceiling.
Wittel Dormitory continues today as Auburn's first female private dormitory. Residents enjoy a convenient location across the street from Auburn University's Samford Hall as well as an extraordinary opportunity to live in a designated historic landmark which was recently featured on "Tour of Homes" sponsored by the Auburn Heritage Association.
